Singapore’s foreign worker policies has increasingly challenged by the low-skilled foreign workers, whether it is in the form of Strike in 2012 or Riot in 2013.The foreign workers, who are 15% of the population of Singapore, are driven by the economic attraction of Singapore. They can neither change job nor request the state distributing resources to them. As such, they become a major headache of the government. There are restriction of agents and monitor of payment of wages so as to ensure the worker’s right when money-related issues arise.

In my opinion, the government should mainly focus on the population problems so as to resolve the problem sources of immigrant policies. As long as we have enough local talented, we do not need to put so much effort in attracting the foreign workers. However, the process of conducting the solution of population problems takes a lot of time .We need to face the fact as well as to struggle to remove the source of immigration issues

Why do family do honor killings ? by Zoslyn

Summary : Honor killings is the killing of a family member who is perceived to have brought dishonor upon relatives.But killings can be carried out for more trivial reasons, like dressing in a way deemed inappropriate or displaying behaviour seen as disobedient. Men may also be targeted but mostly it is the women that are being targeted. Thousand of women were being killed  by their family members every year in the middle east and asia. Most of the families are able to escape the punishment simply because there is not enough witness to justify it and there is little motivation in the community for the police to pursue the suspect. Recently, honor killings have sparked protest in places like Paskistan.

Opinion : In my opinion, i feel that honor killing should be abolished in this society. Firstly, it is a bad influence. Honor killing is just a perception of killing family member because they brought dishonor to the family in the past. If honor killing still continues, these traditions will still be carried out or influenced by the next generation. The next generations will just think that it is not an offence to kill their own family member.

Secondly, it is not a right thing to do. As a saying goes " Blood is thicker than water ". Family ties is obviously stronger than friendship. Why kill a family member just because they did something that is wrong but not that serious ? Won't the parent feel remorseful that they killed their own child ? Therefore, why not just give their child a second chance to repent themselves and forgive them.

Lastly, honor killing is a psychotic thing to do. It does not make sense that killing of family members because they brought dishonor upon relatives. If that is the case, it also brings disgrace and inhumanity to the family name. Which is worst ? i guess we all have the same answer.

Thus, i strongly think that honor killing should not be carried out as a tradition anymore and should not be taken lightly.

Honour killing is the killing of a member of a family who is perceived to have brought dishonour upon relatives.  But killings can be carried out for more trivial reasons, like dressing in a way deemed inappropriate or displaying behaviour seen as disobedient.  Men may also be targeted, by members of the family of a woman with whom they are perceived to have had an inappropriate relationship. Perpetrators have sometimes tried to justify their actions on religious grounds - but none of the world's main religions condone honour-related crimes. In some countries, these tribal customs have been codified into law, which may constitute legal grounds for killing a family member. The killings are also more prevalent in disenfranchised or remote communities. Killings have previously sparked protests in places like Pakistan

Opinion:
In my opinion, I believe that honour killing is not a good tradition that should be carried out because this encourages people to kill each other. This makes the people think that it is okay to kill each other sue to religious reasons. This will then also encourage them to use honour killing as a reason to murder someone. Honour killing is also not good because someone has to die just because he had committed the offense of dirtying the family name which I believe can be resolved between the family without murder.

Opinion:

In my opinion, I feel that such a practice is sick. Despite it is taken as honorable, such a practice is stupid. Everyone have a choice to choose their future partners for it concerns their lifetime happiness. If they marry people they do not like, it is considered a ‘shotgun marriage’ and such a marriage would not last. Families kill their family member for disgracing their family reputation and it is a disgrace to see that they care the name than their child.

 

Retirement is a journey, not a destination by ZhiGang

Summary:

With increasing life expectancy and low birth rates, Singapore faces the prospect of a shrinking and ageing population and workforce. The number of elderly citizens will triple to 900,000 by 2030 and they will be supported by a smaller base of working-age citizens. To be sure, more elderly people close to retirement age today are keen to explore new work opportunities or carry on with their careers. Some factors contributing to this include the fact we are living longer and healthier lives.

Opinion:

Singapore is a developed country. Therefore, the healthcare services would be excellent. As a result, the citizens are living longer and healthier lives compared to before. With an increasing life expectancy and lower birth rates, Singapore will have to prepare to shoulder the burden of older elderlies. Preparation have to be made with addition of policies like the MediShield Life to tackle the increased of older people. Elderlies are encouraged to build a comprehensive savings plans for their future as well.
