Elderly article by Ryan

Summary

In singapore many of us desire to live longer but fear the negative aspects that will come as we ages. When we reach our 50s and 60s it's harder to find a job when I need of more money. Due to company unable to view elderly as depositories of experience and skills that can be tapped. If elderly are allowed to display their experience and knowledge for the workforce there would be better productivity and economic. But our culture prejudice them.

Opinion:

In my opinion, elderly in singapore are assets instead of liability. The elderly has survive in the world up till now means that their experience are more than us so if they are allowed to display that experience they can help out the younger ones who are inexperience. If elderly are allowed to work they can reduce the financial burden of younger generation.

Sportsmanship article by Ryan

Summary:

In the 1988 Olympic Games, in one of the sialing event the weather was so windy that one of the boats carrying two sailors from singapore capsized throwing them in to the churning water. Lawrence Lemieux ,a Canadian sailor who was competing in another sailing competition and who was in second place at the time  pulled out of his race and immediately guided his boat over to the capsized Singapore vessel.  He rescued the two sailors, and then waited until a patrol boat could arrive to take the men to safety. He finished the 22nd in the race.

Opinion:

In my opinion, what he did was an excellent display of sportsmanship. He sacrifice his position in his race just to help others who was not related to him.  I think this should be the kind of sportsmanship that all sportsman should have. I believe what the international yacht association did was right.

Helping elderly S’poreans live independently. By: JunTian

Summary: Elderly Singaporeans without family support can look forward to more independent, assisted living within the community. The government have started a new project where elderly above the age of 65 live together in a cluster of rental flats. These group homes are meant for seniors too frail to live on their own, but who do not need or want to live in a nursing home. They are also likely to be on public assistance allowance. With this system, it is hoped that residents can provide one another companionship and mutual support. It will also be easier for volunteers to deliver meals and provide regular medical assistance. There will also be full time staff to attend to them. Each resident also wears a wrist device with a panic button, which alerts social workers by phone and SMS in case of emergencies. The homes, except for the bathrooms, are also monitored by CCTV as a safety feature.

Opinion: I feel that this is a very good idea. The elderly usually do not like to live in elderly homes, however, they really do need the help of others. By renting these flats, they can live independently, but at the same time with friends, and regular help from volunteers. I feel that with all the necessary precautions, it is very safe for the elderly too.

Elderly in Singapore by ZhiGang

Summary: Teresa Hsu Chih was a Singaporean social worker, known affectionately as ‘Singapore’s Mother Teresa’, in recognition for her active lifelong devotion in helping the aged sick and restitutes locally. Mother Teresa founded the Heart to Heart Service and the Home for the Aged Sick, one of the aged sick in Singapore. Mother Teresa was still involved in charity work and was one of very few supercentenarians recognized for their longevity.

Opinion: Elderly are normally known with limited regenerative abilities, prone to diseases and considered weak. Seeing the article on 'Mother Teresa' shows how different it is although she was old, she made herself involved in charity work by helping those who are badly in need. Being the founder of Heart to Heart Service, she lived a simple lifestyle so that the remaining money can go to help those who are in need.

Sportsmanship Article By: Sherman Teo

Summary:

Paolo di Canio, who was once banned for pushing a referee to the ground, has won Fifa's Fair Play Award for 2001. The West Ham player has been given the award for "a special act of good sportsmanship" When Everton’s goalkeeper Paul Gerrard was lying injured in the penalty area, they were faced with an empty net, Di Canio chose to catch the ball rather than score. That goal would have allowed his team to win the game.

Opinion:

In my opinion, what he did was noble and he deserved the award. Instead of kicking the ball which could help his team win the championships, he decided to catch the ball. He decided to become a goal keeper for the opposing team as their goalkeeper was injured and could not play. This left him thinking whether or not it was the right thing to do. I believe that such act deserve a great sportsmanship award for his effort.

NBA Sportsmanship Award 2012-2013

Source: http://www.nba.com/2013/news/04/30/kidd-wins-second-straight-nba-sportsmanship-award-april-2013/index.html

Summary: Jason Kidd of the New York Knicks recieved his second  NBA Sportsmanship Award, and became the first back-to-back winner of the award.  Additionally, Kidd is only the second player to win multiple NBA Sportsmanship awards, joining Grant Hill, who has been honored three times. The NBA will make a $10,000 donation on behalf of Kidd to The Jason Kidd Foundation, which is dedicated to improving education among the youth, by ensuring that kids of all ages have the tools needed through mentoring, tutoring and technology programs to succeed in life. The annual award reflects the ideals of sportsmanship -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity -- in amateur and professional basketball, a key focus of the league's NBA Cares program efforts. The trophy is named for former Detroit Pistons guard and Hall of Famer Joe Dumars, the award's first recipient.

Opinion: I feel that the NBA Sportsmanship Award is very meaningful, and encourages sportsmanship among players. Competitive sports like basketball is usually very physical, and players are sometimes very emotional, and fights are common too. With this award, athletes might look out for their own behaviors,  and play fair with sportsmanship. Jason Kidd have displayed good sportsmanship, and won the award twice in a row, thus showing that he is not only a champion, but also a winner with sportsmanship!

The Republic of Ireland international, 28, miss the start of the season  and then tore a hamstring in October and was out for five months. He is now delighted to back after a frustrating time, although admits he began to adjust to being on the sidelines.

opinion:
in my opinion , even though he injured himself he did not give up hope and have endurance. After his recovery he did not cheats and continue to play a fair game. Act Of Sportsmanship In Softball Game ^O^

Summary: Sara Tucholsky of Western Oregon University hit a home run in a softball game against Central Washington University. However, she missed first base and fell with knee injury. As stated, Sara would be out if her teammates help her. Shockingly, the home-run leader and another player from opposing team lifted Sara around the base paths to let her touch the base with her uninjured leg. The unbelievable sportsmanship soon leave the entire Western Oregon Team in tears.

Opinion: In my opinion, I feel that it is important to hold sportsmanship values in sports games. It does not matter whether one wins or loses in a game as it depends on whether one do their best in the game by having sportsmanship values. Although winning is importance, it is certainly more important to play fairly in the game, respect others in the game, and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitor. Without these values, winning in a game is useless.

Social Media Exposes Girls To Sexual Abuse by ZhiGang

Summary: Today, parts of the global are increasingly leaning on technologies like computer, smartphones. Through these technologies, they connect to social sites which have become more and more threatening. Cyber bullying in these social sites are very common and many teenagers are suffering from it. What is more shocking was that a 13-year old social wall had been posted with strings of sexual questions. There were overwhelming threats and commands which later caused her hospitalized after taking an overdose.
Opinions: In my opinion, I feel that cyber bullying is a cruel and malicious thing to do. The internet gives teenagers a false sense of security, power which causes the people to act the way they normally don't. The people think that the social platforms lets them do what they want by posting nasty comments on others as they would not be found out who they are behind their false names on the platforms. These bullying has to stop to refrain from hurting more people.

Pushover Parents, Pampered Kids by ZhiGang

Summary: Nowadays, parents are more easygoing which result in more pampered children among the younger generation. Less parents change their way of educating their children, there will be more problems. Children this generation equip themselves with the latest technology from their parents as parents tend to give in to what their child wants without thinking whether it is actually good for their children. Parents usually want their child to be loved and giving what they want without knowing they are spoiling them.
Opinions: In my opinion, I feel that as parents, they should not what their child really needs and not really what they want. However, they tend give in to their child wants since they feel that doing so will make their child be loved. Also, they are afraid their child are hurt and thus refrain them from doing household chores. Therefore, this is a reason why Singapore has become more a strawberry generation as the child are as delicate as strawberries.
