Paolo di Canio, who was once banned for pushing a referee to the ground, has won Fifa's Fair Play Award for 2001. The West Ham player has been given the award for "a special act of good sportsmanship" When Everton’s goalkeeper Paul Gerrard was lying injured in the penalty area, they were faced with an empty net, Di Canio chose to catch the ball rather than score. That goal would have allowed his team to win the game.
Opinion:
In my opinion, what he
did was noble and he deserved the award. Instead of kicking the ball which
could help his team win the championships, he decided to catch the ball. He
decided to become a goal keeper for the opposing team as their goalkeeper was
injured and could not play. This left him thinking whether or not it was the
right thing to do. I believe that such act deserve a great sportsmanship award
for his effort.
